How Many Businesses of Your Trade Are in Your County?
Pick a county and a trade and this tool returns the number of locations with paid staff, the rate per 10,000 residents, the employee count, the share of small locations and the county's rank among eleven. Example: Lackawanna County has 15 roofing contractors, 0.7 per 10,000 residents. Wake County, North Carolina (Raleigh) has 118, or 1.0 per 10,000. The data covers ten Pennsylvania counties, Wake and sixteen trades, from the Census for 2023.

Read across a row to see where a trade is thick or thin. Read down a column to see which trades a county has. The trade with a dash may simply be absent or too small for the Census to publish. Rates for Wake use a population figure from another source and are shown for comparison, not as a ranking of quality.
What each result means
Locations. Each one is a single business location with at least one paid employee. A company with three offices counts three times. A person with no staff is not counted.
Per 10,000 residents. Locations divided by the county's population, times 10,000. It adjusts for county size so that Wayne and Lehigh can sit side by side.
Employees. The Census adds noise to employee and payroll figures. Use them as a rough size, never an exact headcount.
Fewer than 5 employees. The Census publishes a size class of 1–4 employees for each trade and county. We show it where it is not withheld.
Rank. The county's place among the counties that list the trade, from the highest rate. A county with no row is not ranked.
What to do with the number
A high rate means more competitors for each customer. Use it to decide how you describe your edge: what you do, where you do it, how fast you answer. A low rate means fewer firms are listed, and it may also mean fewer customers. We cannot tell which from this file. Our Google Ads and Local Services Ads management service sets up local campaigns, and an AI visibility audit shows how AI assistants name the firms in your trade. For a broader view, see the NEPA trade competition study and the county business explorer.

FAQ
Where does the tool get its numbers?
All counts come from the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns file for 2023. Population comes from the ACS 5-year estimate for 2019 to 2023, and Wake County's from federal spending data for fiscal year 2025.
Why does a county show not listed?
The Census has no row for that county and trade. It may have no such locations with employees, or too few to publish.
Does the count include sole proprietors?
No. Only locations with at least one paid employee are counted. A one-person firm with no staff is in a separate Census series.
Can I compare Wake County with the Pennsylvania counties?
Yes, for counts and rates. The two use different population sources, so treat small differences as noise.
How often does the data change?
The Census publishes County Business Patterns once a year, with a lag. This page shows the 2023 file.
